DAWN RELIEF – THE WAY FORWARD
PhotoEncounter Pakistan, an exhibition organised by DawnRelief in support of Pakistan’s flood affected people, will be on view at the Rag Factory in London (14-16 Heneage Street, London E1 5LJ) on Saturday December 4th and Sunday December 5th. It will display an anthology of rare photographs of Pakistan commissioned by White Star, a photo archiving division of The Dawn Media Group and will include the work of Mahmood Qureshi, Arif Mahmood, Tapu Javeri, Arif Ali, Pervaiz Ahmad Khan, UmairGhani, Tanveer Shahzad and Ayesha Vellani.
DawnRelief was established in October 2005 by the Dawn Media Group, Pakistan’s leading news media organisation and has since extended relief and support to people affected by the earthquakes in Azad Kashmir in 2005 and Balochistan in 2006 as well as the refugees from Swat, Malakand and their adjoining areas in 2009. Recently DawnRelief has been involved in providing shelter, food and clean drinking water to the
people affected by the devastating floods that hit Pakistan in July 2010. We are currently providing more than 22, 000 people with critical food, clean drinking water and shelter at camps in Nowshera (Pir Sabaq), Hyderabad (Bhitai Nagar), and in the Thatta and Makli areas. In Nowshera, we are also providing basic health facilities in collaboration with SIUT.
PhotoEncounter Pakistan is an initiative by DawnRelief aimed at raising funds from international donors and Pakistanis residing abroad for the flood affected people in Pakistan. All proceeds from the sale of photographs at the venue will go towards building prefabricated housing units in villages in Baluchistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Sindh.
PhotoEncounter Pakistan is a breathtaking journey that encompasses the stark beauty of the Thar desert in Sindh, the unspoiled beaches and sapphire waters of the Makran Coast in Balochistan, the shifting sands of the Cholistan Desert in Punjab, the majestic heights of the Himalayan peaks in Gilgit Baltistan, the crystal lakes of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the verdant valleys of Azad Khashmir. It is a rare opportunity to experience the diverse cultures and hidden splendours of Pakistan.
