Chinese Arts Centre Wins Creative Excellence Award

Last nights award ceremony in London was a huge success for Chinese Arts Centre, Sarah Champion CEO picked up an award for China Live and gave the following speech.

“We are particularly proud to get the award for China Live. China Live was an ambitious tour of five Live Artists from Mainland China. We toured them to 13 UK venues including Baltic in Newcastle and the V & A in London. At each venue they received huge audiences and rave reviews. Live Art is the most contemporary of all art-forms and, for us, it goes the furthest to challenge the stereotypical image of Chinese arts being only brush-painting and calligraphy. Such was the success of China Live that we are now holding an international festival of Live Art from the 2nd – 5th November. Called “Vital”, it will showcase the best Chinese Live Artists in the world”.

Nominees for the pearl awards were asked to submit a single piece of work, or a number of items that have been published, presented or performed in the 12 months prior to July 31 2006. Chinese Arts Centre submitted China Live 2005, a major UK tour of performances and film screenings that offered audiences a rare opportunity to experience some of the visceral and challenging performance work created by the current generations of Chinese artists. The Creative Excellence Award recognises excellence and outstanding achievement in the visual, performing and literary arts. Chinese Arts Centre are particularly proud to win at the Pearl Awards because of our recent success in securing funding for VITAL International Chinese Live Art Festival 2006 which is a direct result of the success of China Live 2005.

VITAL 06 will be the start of a major programme of Live Art events by Chinese Arts Centre. The festival will take place from 2 – 5 November 2006 and will be followed by a year of residencies by Chinese artists in collaboration with institutions across England. These activities will culminate in a second festival, VITAL 07, which will take place in Manchester in October 07. VITAL 07 will include an international conference as well as a programme of performances. The discussions, residencies and programmed artists will be celebrated in the VITAL publication due out in Spring 08.
