Call to join open air Indian folk dance

Organisers of this year’s Birmingham Diwali celebrations at Millennium Point, sponsored Vodafone, are inviting people from all religions and ethnicity, from across the region, to join in on a mass open air Garba Raas, an Indian folk dance on Saturday 24 October 2009.

With the support of B4U Music and Film, the Hindu Council of Birmingham hope the open air dance, to be held between 2-3pm, will be the biggest Garba Raas in the Midlands.

A Garba Raas is an Indian form of dance that originated in the Gujarat region but enjoyed throughout India and the world. The dance is usually performed during Navratri, the nine-day Hindu festival but as its presentational style is less classical Indian dance, involving clapping and simple dance steps it makes it easy for anyone to join in.

Mahendra Dabhi, President of the Hindu Council of Birmingham, said: “Garbas are generally very colourful, noisy and fun. They are very popular especially with the young in the Hindu community. It’s also a very inclusive dance so I like to call on people from throughout Birmingham to join us on the day.”

Raghav as well as rising stars Navin Kundra, Mumzy, Tasha Tah, 3 Mix, Karen David and Sham will be joined by some on of the best new local talent, such as Biti, Billa Sohota, Desi Nach, Enternal Taal, Sabina, and Girls from Girls Only Global Orchestra in Small Heath School. The event culminates with a fantastic fireworks display.

Diwali@Millennium Point is also in association with NUR 76, B4U, BBC WM, BBC Midlands Today, Asian FX and the Eastern Media Group.

The Vodafone sponsored Diwali will take place in the heart of the city at Millennium Point, Curzon Street, Birmingham B4 7XG on Saturday 24 October from 2:00pm until 8.00pm. For more details log on to
