BITTER SEEDS + Director Q&A + networking drinks

Forced into debt by genetically modified farming, vast numbers of Indian farmers are committing suicide,
but one brave fatherless daughter has had enough and wants some answers.

BITTER SEEDS and short film BANKING ON CHANGE will be followed by networking drinks at the Rich Mix upstairs bar.

Every 30 minutes an Indian farmer kills himself as a consequence of overwhelming debt. In India many farmers switched to genetically modified seeds produced by the American company Monsanto, and the drawbacks prove to be manifold but the low cost of the GM seeds priced traditional methods out of the market and the farmers find themselves trapped in a spiral of debt. The film follows a young female journalist trying to uncover India’s tragic suicide statistics.

‘The documentary is among the most subtle and artful condemnations of the food industry…. wrapped within a gripping character-based narrative.’ Filmmaker Magazine

BANKING ON CHANGE, selected by DocHeads for this screening, follows South Indian bank manager J S Parthiban as he pioneers community banking and micro-loans to villagers, offering hope in alternatives to the money-lenders and banks forcing much of India’s rural communities into debt.
