Birmingham celebrates the music of A R Rahman

The internationally acclaimed City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra will be celebrating one of the world’s best loved film music composers in a spectacular tribute to A. R. Rahman featuring BBC Presenter Noreen Khan on 4th September.

From Danny Boyle’s multi award-winning Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack to the unmistakably awe-inspiring soundtrack to Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings, Oscar-winning Rahman is a musical genius that is able create journeys through music which take the listener from Hollywood to Bollywood and back again. Conducted by Matt Dunkley and featuring performances by Lilly-Jane Young, Sandor Stürbl, Shin DCS and Roopa Panesar on Sitar, the concert will celebrate some of Rahman’s career highlights including music from Slumdog Millionaire, Lord of the Rings and Lagaan alongside music from Warriors of Heaven & Earth, Bombay and Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Music from the legenday Subhash Bose alongside Meenaxi will also feature.

Conductor Matt Dunkley says, “The music by AR has the power to lift the soul and take you to another world. I am thrilled to be conducting some of his best known music live with one of the world’s best orchestras; it’s a night not to be missed.”

CBSO chief executive Stephen Maddock says: “AR Rahman is such a distinguished artist whose work which has a diverse and alluring sound has been honoured at the highest levels. We’re thrilled to be able to perform some of his work in a way that people may not have experienced it before.”

He continued, “the CBSO has, over the years, collaborated with or featured performances from some of the most prominent musicians in South Asian music including: Mohammad Rafi, Sonu Nigam and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and we are proud to be able to continue this, many of whom Michael Seal [CBSO associate conductor] has conducted. These are performances that we are incredibly proud of and although it’s a challenge to bring together the musical elements, it’s one we relish.”
