Batak Textiles of Indonesia

Batak Textiles of Indonesia

Batak textiles from the Lake Toba region of Northern Sumatra are highly prized in museum collections around the world yet in recent decades weaving has fallen into decline and the tradition is now threatened. Anthropologist Sandra Niessen has spent two decades studying the techniques and woven heritage of the Toba, Sumalungaun and Karo Batak in Indonesia. In this lecture she presents her new book, ‘Legacy in Cloth’ the most complete analysis of Batak textiles ever published. She discusses the techniques and extraordinary designs of this rich tradition and considers how today’s weavers can adapt to new economic and social conditions.

Sandra Niessen is a Netherlands-based anthropologist, curator and author of numerous articles on Indonesian textiles.
