Alpana Sengupta Dance

Alpana Sengupta Dance

Alpana Sengupta Dance Company presents Darbari – a new programme of Classical & Contemporary Kathak Dance at Norwich Arts Centre on 27 September, 8pm.

With live music from Mick Taylor on sitar; Fida Hussain on vocals & harmonium and Soumitra Paul on tabla, Darbari draws upon the time of Kathak history when it was introduced into the royal courts of Northern India known as darbars, from where it has evolved as an art form for pure entertainment as well as one of intellectual and scholarly refinement.
Alpana Sengupta is brilliant exponent of the vivid and mesmerising Kathak style of Indian classical dance. Her breathtakingly energetic performances have earned her an enthusiastic International following. She is an influential pioneer in the development and awareness of Indian dance in the West and she has worked tirelessly to bring Indian dance to an ever increasingly wider audience. Her highly professional reputation has been gained not only for her numerous performances but for her dedicated teaching also.
Kathak is arguably the most exhilarating and accessible of Indian classical dance style and Alpana is especially noted for her dynamic performances of rhythmic aspects of the dance as well as for her mime.
