There will also be a live music set from special guest Aziz Ibrahim – Aziz has one of the most unusual musical histories and styles any artist could hope for, including playing in both the Stone Roses and Simply Red. He also has many songwriting credits to his name, including Ian Brown and Paul Weller to name a few.
The two readings will be Punjabi Boy by Amman Paul Singh Brar, a detailed look at the journey of a young British Asian man from private school to middle age and how his reactions to prejudice and love shape his life. Amman was one of the inaugural winners of the BBC Writersroom 10 award with Tamasha Theatre Co. He has been produced nationally including with West Yorkshire Playhouse ‘Still Alive’, Newcastle Live ‘No more Poundshop Wars’ and Bolton Octogon ‘The Love Inn’. He is currently Literary Associate at Richmond Theatre.
The second reading featured will be Shoreditch Bitch, a new comedy by Yasmeen about retail, race and revenge…what happens when the pop-up shops start taking over the high street?
The Rehearsal Room Presents puts the audience at the heart of the evening – each reading will be followed by a short Q&A where you get to give your feedback and also discuss the issues raised in each piece.
This is the third in a series of evenings based on the ethos of Yasmeen’s arts and culture blog,www.therehearsalroom.co.uk, which features interviews with big names alongside emerging talent. The series of evenings aims to provide a platform for new work alongside more established voices and for BME writers and performers to be programmed parallel to mainstream artists. The last Rehearsal Room Presents featured a performance by Nitin Ganatra, currently playing Masood on EastEnders. There was also a Q&A with John Yorke, ex Controller of BBC Drama, current MD of Company Pictures and author of best-selling screenwriting book, Into The Woods.
Yasmeen is a regular voice on radio, including presenting documentaries on Radio 4. Her theatre writing includes the play Break The Floorboards – recently awarded best live event at the Asian Media Awards – which toured around the UK in 2013, playing to over five thousand people.
The Rehearsal Room Presents aims to be an inspiring and interactive evening of entertainment, combining bite-sized pieces of performance together with music and conversation. Just like Saturday morning telly used to be back when it was good…except on stage.
