A South African double bill: FRESHLYGROUND + TUMI AND THE VOLUME

A South African double bill: FRESHLYGROUND + TUMI AND THE VOLUME

A groove laden night featuring two of South Africa’s hottest bands.

Freshlyground are the great party band of young South Africa, featuring the amazing voice of Zohani Mahola, a Mozambican guitarist, and a group that cuts across the divides of race and background in today’s South Africa – as Robin Denselow said in The Guardian “Freshlyground represent everything that the new South Africa hoped to achieve”. They’ll be featuring material from their new Wrasse album Ma’Cheri.

Tumi and the Volume have broken out of South Africa’s hip hop scene, mixing Tumi Mokelane’s conscious lyrics and a powerful blend of funk and afro-jazz that’s seen them playing with Talib Kweli, K’Naan and The Roots. Already stars in France, this is their first UK show – watch out for their new album.

This concert is part of New Africa which is a strand of programming designed to promote new music and to develop artists who represent fresh energy coming out of the African continent.
