50th Antigua Canrnival Roadshow comes to the UK!

GET YOUR costumes and whistles ready because Antigua Carnival is coming to the UK!

Some of the biggest names in the Caribbean will be heading to Britain later this month to host a selection of exclusive indoor carnivals in London, Leicester and Birmingham.

The year 2007 marks the 50th anniversary of Antigua Carnival, and to celebrate the occasion performers and representatives from the beautiful island will be giving the UK audience a taste of what is to come later this year.

Antiguan performers, including Onyan & Burning Flames, Claudette ‘CP’ Peters, El-A-Kru featuring Tizzy, Eddie Mello and Jamella Gregory (Miss Carnival 2006) will be in town for the road show, which will take place on:

Saturday 28th APRIL @ The Y Theatre, LEICESTER
Sunday 29th APRIL @ The Stratford Circus, LONDON
Sunday 6th MAY @ The Drum Theatre, BIRMINGHAM

For the history of Antigua Carnival you have to step back in time to 1 August 1834 when slavery was abolished. People immediately celebrated by taking to the streets to celebrate their freedom and express their joy and happiness.

Over the years there was a return to this informal celebration until 1957 when the first official Antiguan Carnival was organised. Since then the festival has developed into 10 days of music and dance, with street marches, jump-ups and formal evening shows – calypso, pan, and Carnival Queen pageants. The Carnival culminates with a massive street party called J’ouvert (meaning Day Break) where the dancing literally goes on all night and stops mid morning!

Antigua Carnival 2007 takes place from 21 July to 7 August 2007 in St Johns, Antigua.
