This Diwali give a gift that can help to end poverty and suffering

This Diwali, Oxfam is offering British Asians an opportunity to purchase a gift that could make a real difference to the lives of men, women and children living in South Asia. As well as being a celebration of life and a time to strengthen family and social relationships, Diwali is traditionally a time for giving and sharing. Through Oxfam Unwrapped, a gift can be purchased which helps to fight poverty and suffering at the same time.

Oxfam Unwrapped offers gifts that have been identified by the people that Oxfam works with around the world. They have told Oxfam what gifts they need to make the biggest difference in working themselves out of poverty. Gifts include items such as fertiliser (£38), seeds (from £10), goats (£25), toilets (£50), health check-ups (£6) and Protect Women Packs (£30). More than 1.2 million gifts have been bought since Oxfam Unwrapped launched in 2004, supporting people in 49 countries, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan.

Oxfam Unwrapped’s project co-ordinator Iram Yasin said: “Oxfam recognises that Diwali is a festival that is about celebrating with family and one that is also about sharing with others. It is for this reason that we would like people to seriously consider buying a Diwali gift from Oxfam Unwrapped. These gifts can help us to continue to do the invaluable work that we have been doing in South Asia since 1951 – helping communities to overcome poverty and suffering.”

When an Oxfam Unwrapped gift is purchased, as well as the knowledge that your gift is helping to fight poverty and suffering you receive a card with a gift description, showing how your gift can help and a fridge magnet. Gifts can be purchased online at www.oxfamunwrapped.com, through the Oxfam Unwrapped catalogue, from your local Oxfam shop or by calling 0870 410 5030.
