The unique aspect to this charity’s event is the link between the work of MDM’s offices in both London and Paris. As well as sending volunteers overseas to provide medical care to vulnerable people who are effected by natural disasters (recent earthquake in Peru), conflict (emergency mission sent to Iraq) and extreme poverty (HIV/AIDS prevent amongst the slum dwellers in Cambodia) – both offices run healthcare projects in their capital cities for marginalised populations who cannot access mainstream healthcare services. Overall, MdM operates in nine European countries in this way, and MdM UK’s initiative is called Project: London.
For the Bike Ride challenge, the team meets in London on the first morning, then cycles to the coast to catch a ferry from Newhaven to Dieppe.
Serena Norman said: “Cycling in this stunning scenery for a good cause with a great bunch of people was absolutely magnificent. An experience I will be telling my grandchildren about.”
Cycling through Normandy, Helen Torry, enjoyed “cycling early in the morning, through absolutely stunning French scenery-gorgeous yellow corn, lush green trees and blue sky-amazing !It was so peaceful and just pleasure to be cycling along and enjoying the fresh air-even with the ‘undulations’ !”.
Paul summarised his experience in a few words:” The three days that changed my life and hopefully for someone else who really needs it. Thank you. Best moments: everything.”
In 2009, MDM UK’s London to Paris Bike Ride will leave London on Friday 10 July, arriving at the Eiffel Tower in Paris by late afternoon on Sunday 12 July. Cyclists can rest their tired legs on Monday 13 July, sightsee or visit MDM’s Parisian offices. The return journey is by Eurostar on Monday afternoon.
Participants must pay a non-refundable £99 Registration Fee, then pledge to raise £1,000 in sponsorship funds.

Extra notes about the MDM in our work:
1. Médecins du Monde UK is an international humanitarian aid organisation that provides medical care to vulnerable populations who are in crisis situations because of natural disasters, conflict or extreme poverty; or who are excluded from healthcare. Part of the MdM international network established in 1980, the healthcare is provided by medical and non-medical professionals who volunteer their time and expertise.
2. Its volunteers also ‘bear witness’ to any human rights abuse or obstacles to healthcare that they see, giving people a voice who might otherwise not be heard.
3. MdM UK recruits medical and non-medical volunteers to participate in 93 overseas projects in 51 countries. The MdM network runs three types of healthcare projects: emergency, post-emergency & rehabilitation, and long-term development. Visit: www.medecinsdumonde.org.uk
