Ramadhan call to look for registered charities when giving

Ramadhan is a time when many community organisations and Mosques benefit from the generosity of Muslim people. This Ramadhan the Charity Commission, the independent regulator of Charities in England and Wales, is encouraging people who want to give to charity to check if the charity is registered with the Commission.

Registered charities enjoy a number of generous tax breaks, reputational benefit and can access advice and guidance from the Charity Commission. Registered charities are required to send in their annual accounts each year and to abide by charity regulation, and have good governance structures in place. To find out if a charity is registered visit the Charity Commission’s website: www.charitycommission.gov.uk or call 0845 300 0218 for further information.

Ghulam Rasool, Head of the Charity Commission’s Faith and Social Cohesion Unit said:
“During this time of giving in Ramadhan there are many good and worthy causes that people want to support and give money to as part of their offering. If you do want to give to a charity, I would encourage you to give to one that is registered with the Charity Commission. When a charity is registered it is even more accountable for the money it receives, which gives you added confidence that your gift will reach those people who need it most. I wish you a happy Ramadhan Mubaarak.”

Dr Manazir Ahsan, Current Chair of the Mosques and Imams National Advisory Board (MINAB) said:

“Ramadhan is a time when there is an outpouring of generosity from the Muslim population, with people eager to make donations and gifts to the poor and needy around the world. When giving this Ramadhan, I’d encourage you to follow the Charity Commission’s advice so you can be sure that your Zakat does the most good, and really does make a difference. If you are giving to a registered charity you can visit the Charity Commission’s website to check that the organisation is genuine, and look at the charity’s accounts, giving you peace of mind that the money you are giving this Ramadhan is reaching those in need.”
