Londoners to unite in the fight against Leukaemia

The ACLT, joined by soul legend Beverley Knight, Olympic bronze medallist Tasha Danvers and actors Aml Ameen and Ray Fearon, are urging people across London to attend a bone marrow registration drive at the Choice FM studios in Leicester Square on Saturday 8th November and join the fight against leukaemia.

What could possibly be worse than discovering you have leukaemia? The answer unfortunately is being BLACK OR MIXED RACE and discovering you have leukaemia. At a time when we are celebrating the arrival of the first black U.S. president, heralding a new era of equality for all races around the world, there are still huge discrepancies in the odds of surviving leukaemia if you are from a black or minority ethnic (BME) background.

Remarkably, individuals from BME backgrounds have only a 1 in 100,000 chance of finding a bone marrow match compared to around whart1 in 5 if they were white. The key to overcoming these incredible odds is surprisingly simple, more BMEs are needed to sign up to the UK Bone Marrow register. The ACLT, a charity which was set up to encourage ethnic minorities to register as donors are hosting a bone marrow registration drive at the Choice FM studios to do just that. Just half an hour of your time could potentially give someone the gift of life and contribute to reducing the odds faced by leukaemia sufferers in finding a life saving match.

The ACLT’s tireless work to help give people the gift of life continues despite the tragic death of Daniel-De Gale, son to the charity’s founders Beverley De-Gale and Orin Lewis. A former Leukaemia sufferer, he was diagnosed with the condition in April 1993 and went on to win his battle against the disease when in 1999, he became one of the first black people to receive a bone marrow transplant from an unrelated donor. Daniel was in remission, but due to complications with his health, he suffered multiple organ failure and died in hospital surrounded by his family in October this year.

Beverley Knight, who will be attending the drive on Saturday said “I registered with the NBS two years after hearing the inspirational words of Daniel De-Gale at an ACLT ball. Also there was the mother of Keiton Knight, a little lad who also heartbreakingly lost his fight for life after failing to find a bone marrow donor. I’ll never forget them, their story, and hundreds like them is the reason I’m asking folk to join me at the drive on Saturday to sign up and become bone marrow donors. In Daniel’s name, I urge you, save a life and be a hero.”

The registration drive is being held at the Choice FM studios inside the Capital Radio building on 30 Leicester Square, London WC2H 7LA, between 11am and 3pm.
