Lambeth Charity’s Vision for a Black Heritage Centre in Brixton

Local Charity, Black Cultural Archives (BCA), has been collecting community archives for over 20 years. Previously stored in Coldharbour Lane, BCA are now fundraising to build a new £6.5m home in Brixton for 2011.

£4.2m has already been raised and BCA is required to raise the £2.3m shortfall, in order to meet its target and realise its dream. The BCA wants to get the community behind the fundraising effort and a community fundraising event is being held to help BCA reach its goal.

The event is linked to International Women’s Month and will be held at 02 Brixton Academy, Brixton on 29th March 2009. Featuring well know acts such as comedienne Gina Yashere, Yolanda Brown (MOBO award winner), Ashley Walters – (Actor/Rapper), Paulette Tajah & Janet Kay (reggae artists), Richard Blackwood (MTV), Crazy Cousins feat. Kyla and local talent identified through local auditions will also perform.

It will be a good opportunity for the community to come out, be entertained and hear about the work that we have been doing in the community. We’ve been collecting the memories and items that we see in households everyday, they are important and we should celebrate these in our new centre.
Paul Reid, Director Black Cultural Archives

The BCA project is of local, national and international significance and is a unique and much needed repository for African and African-Caribbean heritage. This state-of-the-art building will explore the multi-dimensional aspects of African and African-Caribbean experiences in the UK. The BCA will tell the big stories and the hidden ones too; personalising the experience so we can all be inspired by the wealth of experience. The centre will provide the right setting to display artefacts and present programme that will tell stories from unique perspectives.

Throughout the UK, we are losing important heritage assets through poor or insufficient appropriate storage conditions. Important hidden heritage such as ephemera, documents and photographs, together with interactive and “living history” elements such as oral and video testimony is deteriorating in lofts, garages, suitcases and plastic bags along with the fading memories of our Elders.

BCA needs the community to support their fundraising efforts through donations, sponsored runs, walks, auctions, cake bakes etc to help them reach their target by November 2009. Get involved, be a part of the history, share in the future . . .
