African and Asian Diaspora to present letter to the Prime Minister at number 10

Members of the African and Asian diaspora are going to number 10 on Friday 7th June to hand in a letter to the UK Prime Minister. The letter outlines views of the diaspora organisations on what Mr Cameron should focus on at the upcoming G8 summit in relation to the IF campaign.

Representatives from the diaspora organisations Diaspora for African Development, Africare, Positive Runway, the Diaspora Volunteering Alliance and Bastiram will be knocking on number 10 so that they can show their support for the IF campaign and highlight their key concerns for addressing global hunger.

Over 30 African and Asian diaspora organisations have signed the letter and are asking the Prime Minister to focus on ensuring multinationals pay their fair share of tax, that the UK aid pledge for 0.7% is enshrined in law and that the UK government plays a leading role in pushing for Private Sector investment which supports sustainable enterprise and local institution development, when he meets with other G8 leaders later this month in Northern Ireland.

The handing in of the letter is being facilitated by Africa-UK, a platform for African diaspora individuals and organisations to engage with decision makers.

Chibwe Henry of the organisation Diaspora for African Development said “I’m excited about the opportunity that we, as members of the diaspora, have been afforded to highlight our opinions in relation to the IF campaign policy asks. Members of the African and Asian diaspora are involved in development day in, day out. All too often our opinions do not reach those in power. This time we are going straight to the top!”
