In addition to all this, the presence of some of the most exotic wildlife sanctuaries of India here; add up to the thrill of all wildlife lovers and nature gazers even more.

So, if you are planning to take a trip to Kerala this winter season, do not miss its Neyyar wildlife sanctuary. Situated in the south-eastern part of the Western Ghats, this sanctuary is a sheer pleasure to visit simply because of its beautiful landscape. Being the drainage basin of the Neyyar River and its other tributaries, this wildlife sanctuary is a treasure trove of diverse flora and fauna. The park sprawls over an area of 128 sq km and has the famous Agasthyakoodam hill in its premises standing tall at an elevation of 1,890 meters.

As you go start on your safari tour to Neyyar wildlife Sanctuary, you can see Sloth Bears, Nilgiri Tahrs, Elephants, Gaurs, Indian Porcupines, Lion-tailed Macaques, Jungle Cats, Malabar Squirrels, Sambars, Barking Deers, Tigers, Wild Boars and Nilgiri Langurs to name a few. Along with this, you also get to see a variety of reptiles like the Cobras, Rat Snakes, Flying Snakes, Vipers, Pythons and Lizards. To top it all, this wildlife sanctuary is home to a variety of exotic birds like the King Fishers, Little Green Heron, Woodpeckers, Darters, Little Cormorants, Little Egrets, White-breasted Water Hen, Common Mynas, Indian Hill Mynas, Indian Cuckoos, Gray Jungle Fowl and the Brahminy Kites.

Since Neyyar Reservoir extends to over 9.06 sq km of are, it offers tourists excellent opportunity for pleasure navigation activities like sailing and fishing. Trekking and rafting facilities are also available here but you should be highly physically fit to take up such challenging trips. Usually, a one-day trekking trip from Neyyar to Kombai to Meenmutty includes boat ride for 9 km up to Kombai and then a 6 km guided trek to Meenmuty falls. Whereas, a two-day trek includes an overnight halt at the camp house of Meenmutty along with other fun filled and adventurous activities like guided row boating up to the deer park, visiting the crocodile rearing centre, trekking in the forest and the lion safari park.

The best time to visit this wildlife sanctuary of Kerala is between the months of October to January. The nearest airport and railway station to this wildlife sanctuary is in Thiruvananthapuram. In case, you want to travel by road, you can drive down via Kattakkada from Thiruvananthapuram.
