The trek to Ladakh monastery crosses numerous passes, it’s a moderate grade trek required minimum of physical fitness and the path does not rise above 4500m.

The famous monasteries of Ladakh are:

Thiksey Monastery: It is the most beautiful of all the monasteries in Ladakh. It is on the north of the Indus River. The Thiskey festival (Thiskey Gustor) is held in the month of October- November. Around 80 Monks resides here. It has a famous statue of Buddha which is 15 meters tall. This statue is the largest Buddha figure in Ladakh.
Mulbek Gompa (monastery) dominates the valley. It is adorned by frescoes and statues. Mulbekh's main claim to fame is the impressive eight meter high Chamba statue, an image of a future Buddha, cut into the rock face, dating back to about 700 AD.
Phyang Gompa: emerges large at the head of a secluded side-valley that tapers north into the Ladakh Range from the Srinagar highway. Hundreds of icons of Buddha are kept on wooden shelves. The Gompa itself houses a fifty-strong community of lamas. It also houses a ferocious veiled protector deity and an amazing collection of weapons.
Sumur Monastery: This trek is the most important monastery of the Nubra valley of Ladakh region. This monastery is the home to hundreds of monks.
Alchi Gompa: It is one of the most beautiful and the most explored monastery of the region. It is the only monastery in Ladakh which is located on flat ground. It displays Kashmiri style in its art and architecture.
Shanti Stupa: The Japanese for World Peace built the Shanti Stupa, at Changspa, on the hilltop, and was inaugurated by Dalai Lama in 1985. Its state of the art work attracts a lot of tourists to Ladakh and is spectacular to watch.

The monasteries of Ladakh are treasure house of rare statues, exquisite wall paintings, ancient thankas (Painting on cloth), precious antique pieces and artifacts.

The best time to visit the Ladakh Monasteries is from June to October.
