Don Valley in the fast lane for major religious festival

Images Video Audio
Staff at Don Valley Stadium are gearing up for a major religious festival with a host of healthy advice for religious fasters.
The venue is putting up posters with advice for all its users choosing to exercise during Ramadan and offering free fruit to keep energy levels high.

Members are being encouraged to drink plenty of water and eat slow energy release foods such porridge, apples and bananas before the hours of fasting to stop them feeling lethargic during their workout.

They are also being advised to reduce gym sessions to 20-30 minutes, doing moderate exercises such as cardiovascular work and light weights.

If gym users at the SIV-managed venue feel light headed or dizzy prior to a workout they are advised to rest that day.

Ramadan is the most important month in the Islamic calendar. For over 1 billion Muslims throughout the world, it is a time for inner reflection, devotion to Allah and self-control as they fast each day.

Fasting at Ramadan requires total abstinence from food, drink and tobacco from dawn until dusk.

Don Valley’s Jabar Yaqub said: “Whilst it is important for our Muslim users to stay active whilst observing Ramadan, we felt is was important to advise them how to do it safely. If you are used to long sessions in the gym, it is advisable to reduce the duration of your workout whilst still managing to maintain a good base level of fitness.”

To celebrate Ramadan with the local community, Don Valley Stadium is also inviting residents to apply for free day passes. For more information call 0114 223 3641.
