Billy Singh, Campaign Coordinator, said “During this period we work with all the professional football clubs in Scotland to send out a clear message that there is no place for racism in football or wider society. We also work with a number of community-based organisations to create a period of anti-racist action which acts as a catalyst for further anti-racist initiatives to take place throughout the rest of the year. In 2006 over 300 actions took place during this period, we aim to build on this in 2007. To encourage participation from a wide section of Scotland’s communities, we work in partnership with the Scottish Executive’s One Scotland campaign and Unison – the public services trade union, to offer grants of up to £1,000. The criteria that must be met to enable community organisations to succeed in their grant application is: active involvement of local minority population; anti-racist educational value involving young people; partnership work with other local agencies and the project must take place within the Fortnight of Action. There is also a number of Show Racism The Red Card resources available free to community groups, schools, local, amateur and junior leagues to utilise during the Fortnight. Fraser Wishart of the players union said “PFA Scotland is delighted to support the many initiatives now undertaken by Show Racism the Red Card. Football has become the focus of many of the ills that afflict our society. We can however continue to utilize the profile of the game and use messages from the players themselves to make sure that everyone in our country, and in particular our children, recognises that racism has no part in Scottish society. The Football Industry in Scotland will in particular not allow racism to play any part in our game. Players of all colour, faith and nationality come to Scotland to play professional football. As the players’ union, PFA Scotland will work to ensure that our members’ workplace – the football ground - is free from racism! Gordon Smith, Chief Executive of the SFA said “The Scottish Football Association once again would like to lend its support and encouragement for Show Racism the Red Card's Fortnight of Action in October. The campaign goes from strength to strength and is now at the forefront of tackling racism not only in football but society in general. I call upon everyone to get involved during the fortnight to send out a clear message to the people of Scotland that we want to live in a country free from racism." |
