THT are looking for six football teams, with seven players in each team, to go head to head in the first ever ‘Play It Safe’ football tournament. The winners will receive prize money and a ‘Play It Safe’ trophy. This fun community event also aims to get across some important messages about sexual health. THT and the African HIV Policy Network (AHPN) will be on hand during the day to give out information and advice, and African food and refreshments and goody bags will be available on the day. Richard Lanek, African Health Promotion Manager at Terrence Higgins Trust says: Play It Safe is a brand new event aimed specifically at African communities in South London. We are very keen for people to come along and find out about the services we provide. We’ll be holding the football tournament, but if you don’t play it doesn’t matter because there will be plenty to see and do. We hope people from all walks of life will come along, get involved and start talking about the issue of sexual health, which is so crucial for our community." African communities in the UK are disproportionately affected by sexual ill-health and face the biggest increase in new HIV diagnoses. Nearly 3,000 black Africans were diagnosed with HIV in England in 2005. Diagnoses of HIV transmitted through heterosexual sex are much higher among African communities than among white people. Play It Safe’ is part of the Harambee project which was set up to raise awareness of HIV and sexual health among African men in Lambeth and Southwark. Harambee, which means 'pulling together' in Swahili, began in February 2005 and is funded by the Big Lottery Fund. The Harambee project team give advice on where to go for a free sexual health check-up, including referring people to THT's Fastest services which offer free testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections within an hour. |
