By Emdad Rahman
Ben Jonson School in Tower Hamlets, East London hammered home the importance of regular school attendance, heralding in November by holding a day of fun and festivities to promote school attendance.

"Children paid 50p to not wear school uniform, whilst teachers sponsored one another to wear uniform," said Jay Hussain, The school's Welfare Advisor.

Activities over the course of the day included face painting, henna and mehndhi art, cake stalls, score a goal competition, a raffle, and a badge stall. The highlight was a closely fought lunchtime football game between pupils and the teachers, with the pupils winning 3-2, courtesy of an own goal by calamity prone goalkeeper, Jay Hussain.

"In all, it was a wonderful day of fun and frolics and in the process we raised £425 towards Attendance rewards" said Jenny Rollison, the school home support worker with responsibility for school attendance.

During the last academic year, Ben Jonson Primary School finished third in the attendance table of the London borough of Tower Hamlets.
