Double whammy for Azeem Ibrahim as he lands Top Citizen Award and Honourary Doctorate

Azeem Ibrahim, the Scottish entrepreneur, scholar and philanthropist has been awarded both the coveted St. Andrew's Society's Distinguished Citizens Award for 2009 as well as an Honourary Doctorate from Glasgow Caledonian University.
The St Andrew’s Society’s mission is to celebrate Scotland and Scottish identity and culture through service and fellowship. It is regarded by many, including the Scottish Government, as one of the world's most progressive Scottish cultural organizations. Each year, at the Annual Saint Andrew's Day Feast, the Society recognizes the accomplishments and contributions of a Scot on the international stage by presenting him or her with their highest honour - the Distinguished Citizen Award. Previous recipients have been very impressive ambassadors for Scotland - including last year's recipient, Arne Duncan, who became President Barack Obama's Secretary of Education.

This year, Azeem Ibrahim was honored and offered the award, which was formally presented on the Saint Andrews Day Feast on Friday 20th November 2009 in Chicago.

President and CEO of the Society Gus Noble said, “The mission of the Saint Andrew Society is to nourish Scottish identity through service, fellowship and celebration of Scottish culture. We recognize the importance of Azeem’s commercial, civic, military, academic and charitable accomplishments. For all of his achievements and for his role in nurturing Scotland's profile and character, I am honoured to invite him to accept our 2009 Distinguished Citizen Award”

This comes shortly after Azeem was informed that he has also been awarded an Honourary Doctorate from Glasgow Caledonian University. The D.Litt. (Doctor of Letters) was presented to him in a lavish ceremony at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall with over 2000 people in attendance. In awarding him the Doctorate, Vice Chancellor Pamela Gillies said, “The University Senate seeks to recognize Azeem’s outstanding work in global international relations and community development and regeneration in Scotland.”

Azeem, who is no stranger to receiving awards, just two months ago Azeem was awarded the Insider Elite International Executive of the Year Award and was also commended by the Prime Minister for his work on the Social Mobility Task Force. Azeem said, “I am totally thrilled and overjoyed to receive all these awards. I was born and grew up in Scotand but have spent the last few years travelling the globe, but Scotland has always been my home. I try to better it when I am here and try to promote it when I am abroad. “
