The competition is open to children from the ages of three to 10 years. Giving children the opportunity to create a ‘fire safety hero’ helps them to start thinking about fire safety and encourages families to also be aware of the issues. The winning design for a fire safety hero will feature in advertising materials for the national Fire Kills campaign to warn children about the dangers of fire and give them fire safety advice. The Fire Kills campaign highlights the importance of having a working smoke alarm, as research shows that people without a working smoke alarm are more than twice as likely to die from a fire. The campaign has identified Polish, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Somali heritage communities as being at potentially higher risk of fire due to low fire safety awareness and lack of working smoke alarms. Character ‘Frances the Firefly’ is being used to encourage children to enter the competition. ‘Frances the Firefly’ who warns of the dangers of playing with matches, features in reading books, audio book and as a video animation which are available in different languages. The winning design will be chosen by a panel of judges including Mohammed Ali, Artist, Sagal Jama Bilingual Fire Safety Advocate for Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service, and Roland Chojnacki, Director of the Polish Cultural Institute. Speaking about the ‘Fire Kills’ create a fire safety hero art competition, Fire Minister Shahid Malik said: “The ‘Fire Kills; art competition is a fun way for children and their families to learn more about fire safety in the home. Learning together is a great way of identifying and reducing fire risks and helps to reinforce the vital importance of having a working smoke alarm in the home. " Sponsor of the competition, LEGOLAND Windsor is providing the prize for the overall winner. The prize is a family ticket to visit the Windsor theme park and the winning design will go on to become part of the national Fire Kills campaign. Karen Smith, Head of Marketing at LEGOLAND Windsor said: “At LEGOLAND we know all about the importance of having fun in a safe environment. We’re pleased to support this campaign and hope the competition attracts lots of creative entries. It’s a great way of allowing children to use their imagination whilst learning about important safety messages.” The deadline for entering the competition is now Friday 29th January 2010. |
