75 energetic volunteers of Pratham UK participated in this year’s British 10km London Run, raising over £13,500 through sponsorship. Pratham UK helps to raise funds for Pratham, India’s largest NGO, that is dedicated to teaching underprivileged children in India essential reading and writing, as well as basic arithmetic.
The official British 10km London Run took place on Sunday 12th July. The event attracts runners from across the world, all walks of life and every level of running ability, including professional athletes. This year, a total of 27,000 runners took part in the national event to raise awareness and funds for their chosen charities.
Mark Bell was the fastest runner among the Pratham UK team. He finished the run in an impressive 40:10 - just ten minutes behind the overall winning competitor who crossed the line in 30:20. Mark was followed by Aditya Misra-Godwin who came in second for Pratham UK with a time of 42:10 and Tom Roderick was not far behind, finishing the race within a respectable 46:10. Pratham UK’s youngest participant was 14 year-old Shivam Talukdar.
Since 1994 Pratham has dramatically improved literacy levels in India and galvanised essential change to the country’s education system. Pratham’s mission is to have “every child in India in school and learning well”. Having brought primary education to 33 million children through its flagship program, Read India, which has channelled the combined efforts of Pratham’s global subsidiaries and international governments, Pratham aims to reach its target of educating 100 million children in India by 2010.
In March 2003 Pratham UK was established by a group of volunteers who have been associated with the charity’s movement for several years. The aim of the UK incorporated charity is to raise awareness and funds for Pratham’s programs in India. Since its UK launch, the charity has raised significant sums of money through various sporting and social fundraising events.
One of Pratham’s newest initiatives is the Pratham Young Professionals Network, a unique platform that encourages philanthropic endeavours amongst 3rd and 4th generations in the UK.
