BME candidate selected by the Conservative party to fight a winnable seat.

Helen Grant has been selected to succeed Anne Widdecombe for the seat of Maidstone and The Weald. At the next election Helen will be looking to hold the seat and become the first black woman to sit in the House of Commons as a Conservative MP. The current Conservative majority in that seat is 14,856.

As a woman of BME origin Helen’s selection is evidence of the changes David Cameron has made to the Conservative party. She is the 11th BME candidate selected by the party to fight a winnable seat.

Congratulating Helen on her success in the Maidstone and The Weald selection meeting last Saturday Caroline Spelman, Conservative Party Chairman, said:

“Helen’s selection as the candidate for Maidstone and The Weald is great news and further proof of the changes that have happened in the Conservative Party under David Cameron.

“As you’d expect the calibre of applicants for this Parliamentary seat was very high indeed and Helen’s success is a credit to her and the local association.
“Helen has a high standard to live up to but I have no doubt she will excel.”

Helen said: "I am thrilled to have been selected for Maidstone and The Weald. It is a great honour to have been given this opportunity and I hope I can go some way to emulate my predecessor in speaking up for the people of Maidstone and The Weald. I will work hard for all those who live in the constituency and look forward to taking on the many challenges that lie ahead.”
