Fifty Years ago today Ghana became the first country in Sub Saharan Africa to gain independence from colonial rule. This landmark anniversary will see the launch of Ghana 50 UK – a season of Ghanaian arts, culture and sport, and is a unique opportunity to celebrate the outstanding achievements of the British Ghanaian community. From athletes and academics to musicians and politicians, British Ghanaians have proved successful in a range of fields. Influential figures in media and entertainment include June Sarpong OBE, hip-hop stars Sway and Dizzee Rascal and author Paul Boakye alongside outstanding sportsmen Michael Essien and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey. Figures currently taking the arts and business world by storm include architects David Adjaye and Elsie Owusu and writer and director Ekow Eshun not to mention diplomat Paul Boateng, designer Helen Teague and MOBO founder Kanya King. To celebrate their achievement, and to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Ghana’s independence, a landmark publication ‘Ghana Who’s Who’ will be released, highlighting the accomplishments of British Ghanaians. Published by What’s on Ghana, the list appears below. Ghana 50 UK will bring together photography, film, theatre, music and literature, sport, fashion and food, and launches with a photographic exhibition to be held at City Hall – ‘Ghana: A Portrait’ based on photographs by Max Milligan.
