The closing film of this year's Tibet Film Festival in London will be the UK premiere of Dirk Simon's "When the Dragon Swallowed the Sun", to be screened at the ICA on 29 July. Damien Rice who wrote part of the film's soundtrack will be performing the film's title track prior to the film screening [note 1]. Thom Yorke and Philip Glass also contributed to the film's soundtrack. The UK premiere is jointly presented by Tibet Film Festival and Rocket Girl.
Seven years in the making, When The Dragon Swallowed The Sun blends art, music and stunning visuals in a powerful representation of the Tibet movement and its current contexts. The film combines full HD footage from India, China, Tibet and the US, along with a prologue narrated by Dennis Haysbert. Featuring the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Richard Gere, some of the most prominent Chinese contemporary artists and a range of diverse voices from within the Tibetan exile community, this is a compelling film, presenting the complexity of the Tibetan struggle with great emotional impact.

Tibet Film Festival returned to the UK this month with a selection of new inspiring films, looking at Tibetan culture and society both in and outside Tibet, whilst offering an in-depth and timely critical insight into the Tibet issue today. The film programme included 2 international premieres, 6 European premieres and 8 UK premieres, with some of the most recent Tibet related material by Tibetan, Indian and other international filmmakers, with a special focus on young and emerging directors. The festival is presented by day for night* [note 2] and takes place in London throughout July, the month that saw the 75th birthday of the Dalai Lama, and goes on tour across the UK from August [note 3].

Tibet Film Festival is a non-profit initiative and supports Tibet House Trust (charitable wing of Office of Tibet, official agency of the Dalai Lama for UK, Northern Europe, Baltic States and Poland) and relief efforts towards the recent earthquake in Kyegudo, in the Kham region of eastern Tibet (Ch: Jiegu, Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province).

A second screening of When The Dragon Swallowed The Sun will be held on 30 July at Ritzy Picturehouse (Brixton), closing this year’s Tibet Film Festival in London. The Tibet Film Festival Party will also be held jointly with Rocket Girl to round off this year’s festival, continuing this year’s theme of music, with a special acoustic set from Isabel Monteiro (Drugstore), an acoustic performance by Longview and DJ set from Chapterhouse. The party will be held at Roxy Bar & Screen on 27 July.
