The African Beach Party

Images Video Audio
Afro Entertainment Productions will be hosting the first ever African Beach Party which will take place from 15th - 18th September 2006 at the Butlins Minehead Beach Resort in Somerset. It promises to be a weekend of day and night-time fun and entertainment.
A spokesman for the company, Sibongile Williams, says: “The main objective of this event is to bring the whole African community together in a relaxed holiday environment. Most people in our community hardly go abroad on holidays so we have created a package that is affordable and local. Prices for the three days start from just £94 per person and there will be coaches available from all major towns.”

On Friday night there will be a clash of DJs playing all the latest tunes and favourites from Africa. The DJ line-up includes DJ Edu from BBC 1xtra, the host of the UK’s only nationwide African music show, DJ Abass, one of Nigeria’s most established DJs and TV personalites (he hosts the popular Intro programme on OBE TV), DJ Lloyd Musara (DJs Unlimited), DJ Peekay from London’s Oops Nightclub, as well as DJ Carol (Afro Entertainment) and DJ Ilka (ilkamedia/ management of JJC & 419 Squad and African China).

On Saturday night there will be a showcase of UK-based African artists. Sibongile Williams notes: “UK-based African artists are not often given a chance to showcase themselves. Promoters usually promote artists from Africa who are already established. At the African Beach Party we want UK-based African artists to get the recognition they deserve.” There will be live performances by rising Soul singer Janet Gabriel (Nigeria) and the new Prince of Afrobeat Inemo (Nigeria), as well as African hip-hop by Divided Kingdom Republic (Zimbabwe) Kimba, one half of Real Elements (Malawi), Tappa Tapps Crew (Zimbabwe), Lindanamathugs (South Africa) and Sick Men of Africa (Zimbabwe). The evening will be hosted by Black Mango Sound System (South Africa/ Zimbabwe) who will be spinning the biggest tunes from Southern Africa and beyond guaranteed to get you in a party mood.

Apart from night-time entertainment, the African Beach Party offers countless activities for daytime fun, too, like the sandy beach, splash water world, outdoor pool, football, volleyball, netball, horse-riding, diving and canoeing. There is a free fun fair with over 20 different rides for people of all ages, as well as activities for children of all ages (including meeting the characters Bob the Builder, Billy Bear, Pingu, Fireman Sam etc.). The resort also has an in-house nursery where you can leave your children with specially trained nursery staff while you enjoy other activities.

The Minehead Resort is just seconds away from a beautiful sandy beach and sheltered by the dramatic hills of Exmoor. It’s surrounded by some of the country’s most beautiful countryside, villages and harbours – from the seaside towns of Lynton and Lynmouth connected by an amazing cliff railway, to historic Watchet with its marina and museum. The area is great for walking too, and is home to Exmoor ponies and the largest herd of Red Deer in England.

Other places to visit nearby include the Exmoor National Park, Wookey Hole and Cheddar Gorge caves, Tropiquaria wildlife park and the 13th-century Cleeve Abbey monastery.

Prices start at £94 for three days (full price list below).

To book call Butlins on 0870 145 0045 (quoting reference 822).

Please remember this is a holiday and you need to book in advance (by 4 September 2006).
