Gilberto Gil solo

Images Video Audio
Gilberto Gil is one of the great icons of our time. Making a very rare appearance outside London, Gil plays in a solo set that gets to the very heart of the art of a consummate songwriter. Tonight's concert reflects the recording 'Gil Luminoso', with songs that stretch back over twenty five years of a fascinating career.
In the 1960s, Gil was at the heart of Tropicalia, the most important creative movement in Brazil since bossa nova – politically charged and controversial, this led to exile in London in 1969, where he absorbed the influences of popular music from rock to reggae, all of which have informed an inspirational spirit that transcends genres and nationalities.

Here Gil plays in a solo setting that gets to the very heart of the art of a consummate songwriter. These UK concerts reflect the recording Gil Luminoso, with songs that stretch back over 25 years of a fascinating career. Gil Luminoso is his only recording to showcase his exquisite talent in the minimalist setting of voice and guitar. The album was recorded in 1999 and was packaged as a companion piece to the Bené Fonteles’ book GiLuminoso: a poética do Ser. The album was released in March 2007.

The fifteen songs on Gil Luminoso were written over a span of some twenty-five years but they all share a common spiritual character, a quality that is enhanced by the solo performance. Here the inimitable Gilberto Gil reveals some of the deepest philosophical facets of his art.

The album’s themes are many; some originated with Tropicalia (Cérebro eletrônico); others refer to self-knowledge (Aqui agora, Meditação, Retiros espirituais). There are songs that range from celebration (Tempo rei, Raça Humana) to politics (Copo vazio, O seu amor) to a profound sense of humanity (Super homem, Metáfora, Preciso aprender a ser só), proving that Gil is one of the most original artists in an illuminated Brazil.
