Gospel Aid Nigeria

Images Video Audio
Taking place this coming bank holiday Sunday, 6 May 2007, 6pm - 11pm, at South London’s Club N-Tyce, Gospel Aid Nigeria, hosted by popular Nigerian comedian Julius Agwu, aims to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS in Nigeria whilst at the same time showcasing top class Gospel acts Sammy Oposu and Infinity from Nigeria and from the UK Four Kornerz, G Force and YolanDa Brown.
Globally 40 million people are affected with HIV and AIDS and a large proportion are people from African descent. Out of the 140 million registered Nigerians just under 5% are affected by HIV and AIDS. There are over 1,000,000 AIDS orphans today in Nigeria alone! (Source: National action committee on AIDS www.naca.org.ng/ www.unaids.com). AIDS has invaded every corner of the country and everybody is affected, whether directly or indirectly.

Gospel Aid Nigeria will be hosted by Julius Agwu, who is sometimes penned as the African version of Eddie Murphy. Julius is the founder and host of the hit comedy show ‘Crack Ur Ribs’.

The event’s headlining act is Sammy Oposu, Nigeria’s most renowned Gospel artist. Sammy hails from Delta State and he has performed all over Nigeria, Africa, Europe and America. Labelled as one of the most electrifying and inspiring voices in Gospel, his music has won him not only a wide audience and critical acclaim, but also numerous awards including 2005 Best Male Contemporary Gospel Artiste (Amen Awards, Nigeria) and Best Male Gospel Artiste in Africa (KORA Awards, South Africa).

Infinity is one of Nigeria’s most promising Gospel groups on the continent. Their current hit single is ‘Olori-Oko’ which is also the title track of their debut album. The five young members David Adebiyi Thomas, Akinbode Kehinde, Nnogo Samson, Sunny Steve and Joseph Robert Okougbo mix R&B, Gospel Hip Hop, Rock, Afro Beat, Fuji and traditional music, and they have performed at numerous events such as the Big Brother Eviction Party, Rhythm Unplugged 2006 and the Music Africa Annual Concert 2006.

Four Kornerz burst onto the UK Gospel scene in 2004. Made up of four brothers, Deji, TJ, Vidal and Daniel, who combine stunning vocals, their debut single ‘Clap Clap’ gained rave reviews from across the music sector and also went on to receive Record of the Week at both UK leading urban stations, Choice FM and BBC 1Xtra. The band’s ability to embrace a variety of sounds - from Funk, R&B, Soul and Jazz to more traditional Nigerian rhythms – has all contributed to what many see as a unique and refreshing approach to music delivery which has also resulted in them receiving several awards including Best Gospel Act at the 2006 Urban Music Awards (UK).

Other UK acts to perform on the night will be the extremely talented tenor and soprano saxophonist YolanDa Brown and Gospel rap group G Force who formed at the youth ministry of East London’s KICC (Kingsway International Christian Centre). In between live entertainment, music will be supplied one of the most influential Gospel DJs, Abbey G.
