BME Women’s Health Magazine launch at NHS Leicester City’s First-Ever Diwali Celebration

NHS Leicester City is supporting the launch of a new regional health magazine at their first annual Diwali celebration at Leicester’s Peepul Centre on Saturday 1st November.
The healthy living magazine, The Colour of Health, is a free quarterly publication targeted at BME women.
The magazine will be distributed in community centres and places of worship as well as GP surgeries. It will profile local women’s health stories, and cover issues like maternity care, sickle cell and how to eat for good health.
The Colour of Health is being launched at the trust’s first Diwali celebration which will be a fun-packed family day of activities.
The Diwali celebration opens at 11am and the Colour of Health launch is at midday with speeches from the Lord Mayor of Leicester Manjula Sood, and Philip Parkinson, chairman of NHS Leicester City.
Trust chairman Philip Parkinson said: “NHS Leicester City welcomes the opportunity to support this worthwhile project which can inform and support people in leading healthier lives. It’s incredibly important that everybody knows about healthy living and this is another way to get that message out.”
Peepul Centre founder Rita Patel said: ““I think it’s fantastic that something like this has come to our region as we have a lot of groups who are raising awareness of women’s health issues. Women are central to the health of families and if they are more informed then their families will benefit and be healthier.
“The magazine also covers issues which are unique to BME women and gives them a forum for debate. I say “good on the NHS” for supporting this. Working with women is close to my heart and this is an opportunity and a tool for women to help them take care of their health.”
The Colour of Health founder and editor Cynthia Brooks said: “I’m absolutely thrilled that NHS Leicester City is demonstrating real vision and commitment to achieving equality of health for all by supporting The Colour of Health to represent Leicester’s Black, Asian and minority ethnic community health issues.
“The Colour of Health magazine aims to empower BME women to take control of their health through relevant health information which recognises impact that cultural, religious and traditional lifestyle choices can have on their health.”
The launch will be followed by a two-hour long variety show including Bollywood, bhangra and classical dancing from 12.15pm and the entertainment will run until 4pm. There will be stalls, information, food, activities, free blood pressure and diabetes checks. Free ten-day gym memberships and beauty discount vouchers are also up for grabs at the event.
Tickets cost just £1 and are available from Sanjib on 2951434 or Jit on 2616000. The event is supported by the Peepul Centre, Elys Pharmacy, Good Values Club, Abbey primary community school, Nupur Arts and Asian Rain.
