Empowering BME Community Organisations

Images Video Audio
Reaching Out is a city-wide initiative aimed at raising awareness of drugs and alcohol related issues among BME communities.

We will be training and developing the skills of local Manchester BME community groups/organisations and work alongside the project in delivering drug and alcohol education and awareness sessions and supporting users, families and carer’s in accessing treatment or related services.

‘Reaching Out’ is a culturally sensitive and innovative education and awareness initiative established by the Manchester Drugs and Race Unit. The main objectives of the initiative are to:

• Increase knowledge and awareness of drugs and alcohol related issues among BME communities
• Assist BME drug users, their families and carer’s in accessing appropriate treatment and support
• Increase understanding of BME drug users, families, carer’s and communities among policy makers, commissioners and service providers

We will be training and developing BME communities to:

• Deliver drugs and alcohol awareness sessions in their community.
• Become screening and referral points for BME drug and alcohol users, their families or carer’s
• Provide a ‘Handholding Service’ to support BME drug users, families and carer’s in accessing mainstream drugs and alcohol services in Manchester

For further information and to discuss this initiative in more detail please contact Jawad A Mahboob Reaching Out Coordinator, Manchester Drugs and Race Unit, Black Health Agency, Zion CRC 339 Stretford Road Manchester M15 4ZY Tel: 0161 232 5384. Email: jawad@blackhealthagency.org.uk
