Azeem Ibrahim to advise US Congress on Security

Images Video Audio
Scottish Academic, entrepreneur, and philanthropist Azeem Ibrahim has been asked to brief a special Capitol Hill Homeland Security meeting at the United States Congress on the lessons learned on the best way to prevent terrorism.
The SOLAS Foundation, which Ibrahim is funding through his private foundation – Ibrahim Foundation; is a cutting edge think tank designed to provide innovative solutions to the problem of young Muslims’ radicalisation in Scotland. It is the first initiative of its kind to be based on the academic research about what works in the field of deradicalisation – cutting off the radical ideology at the root by education.

A senior anti-terrorism expert in the UK government who works very closely with the governments of the US, Canada and other EU countries said that he believed that the SOLAS Foundation is one of the best project of its kind anywhere in the world and it is a testament to SOLAS that the US, which spends billions researching security per year, would consider looking at such an initiative in Scotland.

Ibrahim will address a Capitol Hill briefing on "Perspectives on Addressing Radicalization and Violent Extremism," and appear on a panel designed to offer diverse viewpoints and strategies to inform Members of Congress and their staff on Islamic deradicalisation. It has been timed to coincide with the release of a report and recommendation from the Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC). He will appear on a panel alongside Alejandro J. Beutel, Government Liaison, Muslim Public Affairs Council.

Dr Ibrahim, who was named as one of the Top 100 Global Thinkers in 2009 by the LSDP European Social Think Tank, will put his argument that the only way to defeat radical Islamists is to reduce the motivation for Muslims to radicalize themselves in the first place, and explain that he and his associates set up the SOLAS foundation in Scotland based on two observations. Firstly, that the crucial stage which turns a normal young person into an Islamic terrorist, is when they begin to believe that Islam justifies violence and close their minds to other viewpoints. And secondly, that the biggest danger to radical groups’ long-term recruitment, motivation, and longevity, is authentic Islamic education, as it shows that Islam actually condemns their interpretation.

This briefing comes one month after the attempted bombing in Times Square by an American citizen of Pakistani descent.
