The Autism Awareness Campaign UK has urged the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families to back a national strategy on autism and a 10 year plan of action on autism and Asperger's Syndrome. Ivan Corea, head of the Autism Awareness Campaign has written to Ed Balls and Shadow Secretary Michael Gove requesting a fully comprehensive SEN debate in the House of Commons.
Autism is a neuro-developmental disorder. According to estimates in the UK there are over 500,000 people with autism. They say that over 90,000 children are on the autism spectrum. According to UK researchers 1 in 100 children may have autism. In London alone there are 15,000 people with autism from minority ethnic communities. Many parents, carers and people with autism and Asperger's Syndrome from BAME communities suffer without proper public services.

Ivan Corea briefly met Children's Secretary Ed Balls at a conference at the weekend - he urged Ed Balls to back a national strategy and a 10 year plan of action to include building autism units in mainstream schools, building specialist autism schools, providing further education and higher education opportunities and launching an Autism Compact with employers to enable those who can work to access the labour market.

Number are set to rise in 10 years so a 10 year plan is absolutely vital according to autism campaigners in the UK.

Ivan Corea said: 'Children with autism and Asperger's Syndrome deserve a world class education too. I appeal to Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Children's Secretary Ed Balls to act on autism and spell out their plans in the Queen's Speech in parliament tomorrow.' He urged more support for children with autism and Asperger's Syndrome frokm minority ethnic communities.

The Autism Awareness Campaign UK enjoys the support of parliamentarians of all parties in the House of Commons.

Disability organisations, community groups, parent groups, carers group and people with autism and Asperger's Syndrome have been writing to their MPs urging them to back the call for a massive SEN debate in Westminster and to be present in the chamber when it takes place to show their suport for children with special educational needs.

Autism Campaigners are urging minority ethnic organisations to support the call for a massive SEN debate by writing to Secretary of State for Children Ed Balls, Shadow Secretary Michael Gove and their MPs in the House of Commons in the Palace of Westminster in London.
