The Asian Indian restaurant industry has taken Britain by storm, as nearly two-thirds of the nations diners prefer to eat curry, and there are more Indian curry restaurants in London alone than in Delhi and Bombay.
To reward Britan¹s best curry houses and Indian restaurants, the ninth Cobra Good Curry Awards will take place on Tuesday 19th December 2006 at 12pm at London Hilton on Park Lane to honour the contribution and extraordinary achievements of British Asian restaurateurs.

Over 800 A-list guests from Britain’s Asian community including prominent celebrities, high profile chefs and individuals from the restaurant industry will grace the red carpet to attend the industry’s most prestigious and longest established award ceremony. 66 restaurateurs have been nominated by the public and there will be 18 winners from the different categories.

The gala event, again televised by Sony TV Asia, has become one of the most anticipated dates in the British Asian calendar and will be hosted by Cobra Good Curry Guide Editor and Curry Club founder Pat Chapman.

Sanjay Anand pioneer of leading Indian restaurant Madhu’s scooped top honours at the previous Cobra Good Curry Guide Awards. Madhu’s is renowned as the top Asian Outside Caterer in the UK as well as for serving delectable Punjabi cuisine with a Kenyan Asian twist. Madhu’s also has the exclusive rights to serve Indian cuisine at the food halls of the world’s most famous store Harrods, London. Sanjay started the business as a 17 year-old Punjabi who enlisted his mother as head chef in the 36-seat restaurant. Today, Madhu’s in Middlesex is a two level restaurant that attracts gourmet diners and celebrities from across London.

“Receiving the Best Restaurant Award at the Cobra Good Curry Guide Awards was a great honour since it is the highest accolade in the industry. I look forward to this years momentous event and wish all nominees the best of luck,” says Sanjay who is also a television chef, Bollywood actor, nightclub owner and property developer.

Chapman’s, Cobra Good Curry Guide, first published in 1984 and now in its 9th edition, features over 1000 of the finest curry houses and Indian restaurants, hand picked from the 9,000 restaurants that now exist in the UK. The British public was introduced to Indian food when the first Indian restaurant, The Hindustani Coffee House opened in 1809, in London¹s Portman Square. Throughout the 1980s and 90s the quality of Indian restaurants greatly improved and now the current Indian restaurants are achieving Michelin Star status.

The Cobra Good Curry Awards recognises the quality and huge variety of authentic food our modern Indian restaurants make available. Nominees represent regional cuisine as diverse as Goan, Gujarati, Rajasthani, Kerelan and Punjabi as well as those whose cuisine is Bangladeshi, Nepalese, Pakistani and Sri Lankan.

Cobra Good Curry Guide Editor Pat Chapman said: “It is a great pleasure to recognise the achievements of quality restaurants in the industry. They are the best in the world.”
