The Oromo Coffee Company is a not-for-profit social enterprise set up by Ethiopian Oromo refugees living in Tameside. Around 250 families arrived in Tameside from 2006 onwards. As a community, they have full residential status but did not want to be reliant on welfare benefits. So they took English lessons provided by local churches and were put in touch with the local authorities to see how they could get their venture started. Tracey Rush, managing director of AsOne Design, comments: “Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee and the Oromo region produces the world’s best. When we were introduced to The OCC, we were delighted to create the branding, packaging and web site on a pro bono basis because the coffee is superb and we believed in the company and its ability to succeed. We have nothing but admiration for the OCC team and will be offering our continued support to their fledgling venture.” She continues: “The next step is for coffee drinkers to support the Oromo Coffee Company. There are 3 Fair-Trade certified, organic varieties of ground coffee and coffee beans available. By purchasing this great-tasting coffee, you are not only ensuring a good price for smallholder farmers but you are also helping communities in the UK.” |
