The north’s first chilli festival is being welcomed by grow your own experts Greenhouse Sensation. Emma Lowther-Wright from the company said “We hope to convince people that it is easy to grow their own chillies, so we will be on-hand to offer growing tips and advice as well as tastings from our own chilli crops.” Greenhouse Sensation’s team certainly knows a thing or two about chillies. They grow thousands each year, have been regulars at the Southern chilli festivals for five years and several of the chilli farms in the UK use the company’s growing kits. Many lovers of what some call ‘nature’s napalm’ admit to finding them addictive and chillies are celebrated all over the world for good reason. They are one of the best sources of vitamin C and are packed with antioxidants, vitamin A, potassium and folic acid, and they have been used to treat arthritis, asthma, constipation, poor appetite, indigestion, lethargy, tonsillitis and toothache. Health benefits are only part of the explanation as to why these fruits have such a dedicated following. More telling is that they trigger the release of ’feel-good’ endorphins, which lift the spirit. The hotter the chilli, the more endorphins are released, explaining why the hottest chillies are so sought after. |
