Tasting the Caribbean without costing the Earth 23rd May 2008

Images Video Audio
A Caribbean Carnival was no excuse for clocking-up the food miles for Lancashire’s grow your own experts. As Preston’s Caribbean Carnival approached, a local company celebrated with their own taste-fest of the fruit and vegetables of the islands with a difference - all the dishes were prepared with fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices they had grown in their greenhouse.
Greenhouse Sensation’s Emma Lowther-Wright said; “We are all food-obsessed and Preston’s biggest annual celebration gave us the perfect excuse to eat the fruits of our labour. It all tastes so much better knowing that we haven’t clocked up any food miles and that we have no packaging waste.” The team enjoyed green bananas and papaya chopped into fruit salads with fresh mint; salads of pak choi with chillies, ginger and coriander; and grilled banana with ginger and rum.
The environmentally conscious team is hoping that their pineapple, custard apple and guava fruit will be ready for next year’s carnival.
There was plenty of the delicious food to go around as Greenhouse Sensation has 100 bananas ripening on two plants in their greenhouse and twenty huge papaya fruit each measuring approximately 30cms long and weighing in at 1kg each.
All of this healthy food was grown in Greenhouse Sensation’s Hydro Systems in the Lancashire village of Mawdesley. Emma Lowther-Wright from Greenhouse Sensation explained: “The Hydro Systems are growing kits that make it easy for anyone to grow fruit and vegetables in even the smallest spaces. The Hydro Systems automatically keep plants fed and watered for up to two weeks at a time making sure the plants never receive too much or too little of anything so that they grow very strong and healthy and giving us time to celebrate the Carnival!
The greenhouse is open to visitors Monday – Saturday. Plantsmen are always on-hand to show visitors around and to share their growing tips. Bananas and papaya ripen unpredictably, but visitors who turn up on the right days can also taste-test the fruit.
