Co-produced by Percept Picture Company and Bhandarkar Entertainment, this groundbreaking film reveals the stark reality of an inmate’s life in Jail. It revolves around an ordinary man Parag Dixit (Neil Nitin Mukesh) – living the dream life, with the perfect girlfriend (Mugdha Godse) and a promising future ahead, who finds himself trapped in Jail due to a cruel twist of fate. True to Bhandarkar’s inimitable filmmaking style, this film crushes popular misconceptions about prison life, revealing the darkest corners of the Indian jail system, where no filmmaker and certainly not the average man on the street have ventured before. A central theme of the film is that scarily enough this could happen to any ordinary man. Even before its much-awaited release, the film has been embroiled in controversy over Neil Nitin Mukesh’s bold nude scene - the first full frontal male nude scene in Indian cinema, which was deleted while editing the movie itself – in order to survive the censor board. Neil fully defends the scene and insists it wouldn’t distract the audience since the narrative is high on emotional quotient. It is interesting to note Neil used the method-acting approach for Jail to identify with his character. He had to lose his muscular body for this role and was even beaten up by his friends on the sets to get the right look. The film also stars Manoj Bajpai, who made a trip to Tihar Jail in Delhi for the second time in his life for the film’s promotion, and the beautiful Mugda Godse who made her much-talked-about debut in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion. The Jail saga continued with Director Madhur Bhandarkar and Neil Nitin Mukesh, who spent Diwali with the inmates of the Tihar Jail, where the song “Daata Sun Le” sung by melody queen Lata Mangeshkar has been incorporated as a prayer song for the inmates. The very fact that the track is sung by the veteran singer gives it an edge, its soft notes making it a classic. The film’s music has been scored by composer brothers Sharib and Toshi Sabri along with Shamir Tandon, and features an appealing mix of melodious and pacy tracks, complete with chart-topping remixes. Contrasting Lata’s “Daata Sun Le” track, “Bareli ke bazaar mein”, is an energetic item number crooned by Sonu Kakkar. It’s a confluence of rustic influences with western electronic beats, which to a large extent makes it a song for the masses. Then there is “Milke yun laga”, a love ballad that has composer Sharib behind the mike. It has a strong rock feel and creates an impact. And finally there is the power-packed “Sainya ve.” The song has two more versions – one a remix and the other rock. |
