Skillset Launch New Digital Film Training Programme

Images Video Audio
LONDON: Skillset is to fund a nationwide programme to give film companies across the UK access to the business training that will help them seize the opportunities of the ‘digital age’. Skillset are particularly keen to receive applications from film businesses within the UK’s strong ethnic community.
HUGE and Northern Alliance have been commissioned by Skillset to deliver the programme and today they launched a call for applications to a unique scheme for film companies looking to build digital media into their business plans. This six-month programme will provide successful applicants with the knowledge, skills and experience needed to develop their own digital media technology, content, marketing and business strategies.

Working with the UK’s national and regional screen agencies, the scheme will conduct a series of workshops across the UK designed to transform the readiness of film businesses for the digital era. Film businesses will also be brought together into two landmark events where the leading expertise in digital media will map out the frontiers of film in an age where the internet will be the dominant means by which audiences watch films. The scheme not only provides workshop-based exploration of digital media techniques and trends but also a set of online tools to help companies develop their own business plans.

The deadline for entries is Monday 12 October.

Take12UK is the first scheme to emerge from Take12, the prototype programme launched by NESTA and the UK Film Council in 2008. Take12, also known as ‘Digital Innovation in Film’, was an 18-month project that teamed film businesses including B3 Media, Revolver Entertainment, Warp X with specialist partners to help them digitise, market and distribute their films to audiences around the world in new ways.

Morgan Holt, director of HUGE, said: “Film companies need to learn new business skills in order to compete in digital media. Not only does digital media lack the funding structures of the traditional film world, but it presents significant new challenges in the form of multiple business models, marketing and, of course, piracy.”

Mike Kelly, Managing Director of Northern Alliance, said: “The most important task for independent film companies is to work through these issues and figure out how they can survive and thrive in a digital age, we’re looking forward to helping film businesses across the UK do this.”

Neil Peplow, Skillset’s Director of Film, said: “Skillset’s research has shown that two of the areas that most need sustained investment in training are strengthening business skills, and helping industry to deal with the challenges and opportunities that new technologies bring.
Take12:UK provides an excellent opportunity to disseminate learning nationally from the Take12 programme, help UK companies develop digital strategies, and help them compete successfully in the international marketplace.”

Haidee Bell, NESTA’s Programme Manager for Creative Economy programmes, said: “This programme is an excellent way to draw lessons from the Take 12 pilot to support the UK industry more widely. The chosen companies will not only receive vital support for their own businesses, but will also be helping us to design a broader framework of intervention and support for independent film companies across the country.”

Peter Buckingham, Head of Distribution and Exhibition at the UK Film Council, said: “The UK Film Council is pleased to support the Take12:UK programme, which will provide film companies across the UK with valuable skills and strategies to bring film and technology closer together, keeping the UK film industry competitive and firmly at the forefront of digital innovation. It is essential that the UK film industry is equipped with new and effective business models to face the digital future - only then will content creators and rights holders be able to maximise the value of their content, and audiences be able to enjoy the widest possible access to film.”
