PRESS RELEASE:

“SHOT IN BOMBAY”: NEW DOCUMENTARY FILM WITH BOLLYWOOD SCREEN LEGEND SANJAY DUTT

SHOT IN BOMBAY is directed by acclaimed American documentary film maker Liz Mermin. Filmed over six months in Mumbai, Shot in Bombay is a unique look at a Bollywood film from production to release and captures all the chaos and behind the scenes drama of Bollywood film, Shootout at Lokhandwala. Starring screen legend Sanjay Dutt, the documentary contains a frank interview with the star – his last before being handed a six-year prison sentence earlier this year.

An exclusive screening will take place at the prestigious Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), Pall Mall on Wednesday 19th December at 6.15pm followed by a Q and A with Director Liz Mermin and Producer Nahrein Mirza conducted by BBC Asian Network Presenter Jas Rao.
This will be followed by a two week theatrical run at the ICA from the 18th January 2008 and then a regional tour of the UK.

During the filming an intense drama unfolded around Sanjay Dutt, whilst being followed by the filmmakers, the case against him for illegal arms possession from 14 years earlier finally came to court for sentencing.

Bollywood superstar Dutt plays A A Khan, the Mumbai police officer on which the film’s lead character is based. A A Khan became a notorious local hero after a shootout with Mumbai gangsters involving five hundred police. Incredibly, 1,400 rounds of ammunition were fired and all the gangsters were left dead against a backdrop of a middle class high rise complex.

Dutt’s predicament becomes increasingly uncertain because of his conviction for possessing firearms linked to India’s 9/11 – the day in 1993 when Mumbai suffered 13 terrorist bomb blasts in the space of two hours.

At the time of this going to press, Dutt has been convicted and is serving time in Pune Jail.

The film makers have rare and unprecedented access to the actors both on and off the set as well as the real life Mumbai police on which the story of the film is based and who recall in graphic detail the events of the actual day.

Another massive Bollywood star in the impressive cast list of Shootout at Lokhandwala is Amitabh Bachchan, voted Star of the Millennium in a BBC survey, and part of India’s super-elite of actors, statesmen and politicians. Appearing alongside him is his son Abhishek Bachchan a leading actor in his own right, while the role of the arch villain is taken by Bollywood heartthrob Vivek Oberoi. The cast also includes Sunil Shetty, Arbaaz Khan, Tusshar Kapoor and Diya Mirza.

Liz Mermin is the Director. Her credits include Office Tigers which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, Time Out called it “Engrossing” and The Beauty Academy of Kabul, a story of American beauticians spreading the word. The Los Angeles Times called it “Wonderful.... a profound reminder of the things that make us human.”

Nahrein Mirza is the Producer for Little Bird- a multi award winning film and television production company with offices in London, Dublin and Johannesburg. Nahrein also heads up the Little Bird Asian focused division, Little Bird East. Mirza has worked on such diverse projects as the children’s comedy series Uncle Max starring David Schneider, Werner Herzog’s Invincible and Thaddeus O’Sullivan Ordinary Decent Criminal.

Mirza says:
“I am thrilled that Shot in Bombay has a theatrical home at one of Europe’s most cutting edge venues. The ICA represents a programme of not only excellence in film making but always with a view to great entertainment for their audience. I think Shot in Bombay is a perfect fit for their programme.”
Tickets for SHOT IN BOMBAY are on sale now at the ICA box office on 020 7930 3647.
