Staying away from modern commercial hip hop culture and honouring its history and creators, Smash Bro’z keep to the raw foundations of the dance form and will reconnect with their heritage in a DNA themed performance at this year’s BASS Festival. Expect a riot of moves, including freezes, footwork, trips and flips as the crew depict the journey of a young scientist in search of a cure for the misrepresentation of hip hop in the UK. Part of a double bill called ‘Insanity Isn’t and Fresh Genes’, Smash Bro’z will be sharing the brand new mac stage with Miami’s Rudi Goblen. Musician and acclaimed B-Boy dancer, Rudi has been breaking for over 14 years winning awards across America, Europe and Asia. The Smash Bro’z name is derived from the 1990s Nintendo game Super Smash Bros, like the dance crew who came together in January last year, it features characters from different games in one umbrella brand. Keen to break stereotype that links hip hop with gang culture many of the Smash Bro’z lead local dance classes and youth workshops. Kashmir Leese, member and co-founder of Smash Bro’z said: “We’re all very excited about BASS Festival. The 2010 line-up looks amazing so it’s an honour to be part of the bill.” Ammo Talwar, Director of Punch Records said: “As a collective Smash Bro’z have recently qualified for the World Hip Hop Championships in Las Vagas so it’s a great pleasure to have such a high calibre home grown act in the festival. We expect huge things from these dancers so I’m glad BASS can be a part of their career.” Taking place for the fifth consecutive year, BASS Festival is the UK’s only month-long celebration of Black music and art. Organised by Punch Records. this year’s programme will see a range of music and arts events in venues across Birmingham. The 2010 theme is DNA, looking at both personal DNA and the heritage of music. ‘Double Bill: Insanity Isn’t and Fresh Genes’ is on Friday 25th June 2010 from 8pm at the mac. Tickets cost £10.
