‘There Ain't No Black in the Union Jack’ - Big Gig

There Ain't No Black In The Union Jack (inspired by Paul Gilroy’s book of the same title) brings together some of the most exciting talent in Britain today, in a season of new theatre, performance, music and happenings.

Featuring some of the freshest new talent in the UK, ‘There Ain't No Black in The Union Jack’ will take over the Hackney Empire's main space for a night of original music, spoken word, performance, as well a stunning visuals and installations, inspired by the themes and issues behind this ground breaking project.

The programme looks at what it means to be British today, exploring themes of race, place, identity, cultural diversity and imperialism. There Ain't No Black In The Union Jack will be a unique opportunity to discover what young people aged 15 – 30 – from across the capital feel about these issues today.

Music
New music by The Dropouts, The Gutter Goonz and WC1 performing specially written tracks alongside a provocative documentary about grime
Special guests
- Asian Dub Foundation: Featuring Chandrasonic (Gaddafi Opera) and Cyber on tabla
- Duwayne Brooks reading from his latest book 'Steve and Me'. On the night that Stephen Lawrence was murdered, his friend Duwayne was by his side

Other guests:
- Nicholai & Mango Seeds - mixing World Music, and the rhythms of his native Trinidad with Hip Hop, and blazing a trail for Rapso Music in the UK and Europe
- Ajah (Jaheda Choudhury - Lucid - J-Deff) - a Hip Hop collective fusing Hip Hop beats with Rock, Bangla folk & Indie rhythms
- Red Desire, a new all-female street dance group
