Home & Away launches on Thursday 10 April 2008 with California Dreamin’ (Endless), a cinematic tour de force from late film-maker Cristian Nemescu, awarded the Un Certain Regard in Cannes 2007, and continues with an exciting line-up which includes Cristian Mungiu’s (Palme d’Or in Cannes 2007 for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) debut film Occident (2002), two shorts sessions from Romania’s ‘New(-est)’ Wave, one retrospective session from Mircea Daneliuc (The Cruise, 1981), the most flamboyant and irreverent figure of Romanian cinema of the 1980s, and several creative documentaries ranging from the topical and the political, to the humanistic and the visually mesmerizing. And we’ve also invited some guests to come and talk to you about their films. They are: From Romania, Andrei Boncea and Razvan Vasilescu - the producer of California Dreamin’ (Endless) and Romania’s most charismatic actor (Doiaru in California Dreamin’); Nae Caranfil (The Rest is Silence, Official selection, Locarno International Film Festival 2007), Bodgan Mustata (A Good Day for a Swim, Golden Bear for Best Short Film, Berlinale 2008) and Adina Pintilie (Sandpit #186; Golden Dove in DOK Leipzig for Don’t’ Get Me Wrong). From Moldova, Igor Cobileanski (Inspiration; Sasha, Grisha & Ion), from Germany, Razvan Georgescu (Testimony), and from the National Film and Television School in the UK, Marius Olteanu (Reality Won’t Bite). In addition to these, there will be other guests present, offering the opportunity for informal discussions about our vibrant New Romanian Cinema: among them are Eugen Serbanescu, Head of Romania’s National Centre of Cinematography (CNC), Alina Salcudeanu, Head of CNC’s International Relations, film journalist / blogger Mihai Fulger and young actress Mirela Zeta (The Rest is Silence). And if you still feel like talking more about Romania or any place away from it, you will surely find some great partners of conversation in our skilled travellers Dan Perjovschi (visual artist), Liviu Antonesei (writer) and Cristian Topan (caricaturist). You already know that our guest star is missing. Cristian Nemescu, the young film-maker behind California Dreamin’, died at 27 in a car accident. This year’s Home & Away is dedicated to him and conceived in praise of his fresh, hilarious comment on parochialism, intercultural clashes, and Romania's long-term fascination with ‘the elsewhere’. Join us at Curzon Mayfair cinema on 10-13 April for great Romanian cinema from home & away! Yours, Home & Away Team 2008 Ramona Mitrica - Director, Romanian Cultural Centre Adina Bradeanu - Programme Curator Mihai Risnoveanu & Tudor Prisacariu – Design The Romanian Film Festival is organised by: The Ratiu Foundation / Romanian Cultural Centre in London, in collaboration with The National Centre of Cinematography in Bucharest, The Embassy of Romania in the UK and Curzon Cinemas. Supported by: Artificial Eye. Media partners: Romani-Online.co.uk, Diaspora Romaneasca, Wallflower Press. |
