The world’s fashionable and philanthropic were out in force in London on Friday night (28 September) to support Indian based charity, Pratham, helping to raise an estimated £2 million for its Read India initiative. The gala event, which took place at Old Billingsgate, was attended by array of guests including Ozwald Boateng, Meera Syal, Sanjeev Bhaskar, and The Queen of Bhutan. Pratham supporters Srichand Hinduja, and Lakshmi Mittal also made an appearance, as did Dalip and Chandrika Patak, from the famous Patak’s brand. A delectable menu for the evening was designed by Rohit Khattar in collaboration with Admirable Crichton and guests enjoyed a night of spectacular entertainment, including an exclusive live performance by India’s leading pop star, Kunal Ganjawala. The current amount raised during the evening is estimated at around £2 million The exclusive auction, conducted by Jussi Pylkkanen, President of Christie’s Europe, was a huge success, with guests bidding on ten items, including a bespoke Bentley GT Speed Coupe and a holiday to Richard Branson’s private island. The gala dinner was held in aid of Pratham’s Read India initiative which aims to have ‘every child in school…and learning well’. The initiative needs £11 million, over the next two years, to reach the 100 million Indian children of primary school age currently unable to read or write. Through Pratham’s accelerated teaching programme, a child will be proficient in reading and basic arithmetic within 4-16 weeks. |
