Paul Miszewski, Barclay’s head of Human Resources in Southern Africa explained that his company was willing to travel from Africa to the UK because he believes that Africans who have studied in countries like the UK have an international exposure and provide the diversity that Barclays needs in its future leaders. He stated that ‘’Barclays bank is interested in recruiting candidates who understand that the world is a global village as well as take on board global trends”. He also advised that “students should develop values that consider the impact of their activities on the society”. Marc Norris, Head of Consumer fixed at Vodafone in Ghana believes that Vodafone Africa attended the fair at the UK to recruit Africans who were living abroad because the company plans to build a world class business. He believes that Africans who studied abroad posses ‘’global outlooks with local reach’’. He also explained that “historical data within the company has revealed that employees who have studied abroad positively impact on the overall business by stimulating performance”. He advised “that students need to broaden their horizon and have the right mindset”. He also recommended that international students should recognise that the realities in the UKare quite different from those back home and stated that employers are looking for candidates that are not only successful in their studies but are also ‘street wise’. Mr Noruwa, Head of Information Technology for Proctor and Gamble in Nigeria explained that the rationale behind P&G’s participation at the fair was to help grow the company in West Africa as well as employ staff who have a cosmopolitan outlook. He explained that P&G are looking for skill set that employees need to succeed in this company. He stated that qualities like leadership, good communication and interpersonal skills as well as eagerness and zest are what employees need to succeed in the company. Gilles Kuntz, Chief Technical officer for the Asian telecom giant Etisalat explained that they attended the fair because they were expanding their operations in Nigeria and were seeking candidates who were self motivated, dynamic and willing to take on new challenges. He explained that “the company was seeking candidates who posses leadership credentials and who are likely to blend with the organisation’s value”. Jean du Randt, the Group Talent manager of Coca cola stated that the company is looking for candidates that are ‘’customer focused, can demonstrate initiative and have integrity’’. Alim Abubakre founder of These Young Minds explains that employment is one of the fiduciary responsibilities of organisations to the society and believes that this research will inspire actions that will help students to develop more skills to be more employable. |
