Sadiq Khan was appointed as the Minister of State for Transport on 8th June 2009 and was the first British Asian to join the cabinet, making him a truly inspirational figurehead within multi-cultural society in Britain today and the perfect choice as this year’s Eastern Eye Asian Business Awards keynote speaker. As the Minister of State for Transport, Sadiq’s responsibilities include leading on transport business in the Commons, city and regional networks, including London and Crossrail, as well as supporting environmental and climate change issues. The Rt Hon Sadiq Khan, Minister of State for Transport said: “It is an honour to both attend and address the Eastern Eye Asian Business Awards 2010. Previously he was the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt Honourable Jack Straw MP, who was then Leader of the House of Commons. Sadiq was a member of the prestigious Public Accounts Select Committee between 2005 and 2007. Sadiq was a Human Rights solicitor before entering parliament. He also co-founded a Human Rights firm and was chair of Liberty (NCCL) for many years. He was also a visiting lecturer at University of North London and London Metropolitan University, and is a former governor of South Thames FE College. Sadiq is a Governor of two primary schools including the one he attended as a child (since 1993) and the country's first purpose built Islamic ethos primary school (since 2004). Sadiq was a Councillor for Tooting ward in the London Borough of Wandsworth from 1994 until 2006 and was made an honorary Alderman in 2006. Sadiq was born in St George's Hospital in Tooting in 1970. Sadiq is an avid supporter of Liverpool Football Club and Surrey County Cricket Club respectively. Mr Khan is married and has two daughters. |
