Action Plan will unlock potential

AN initiative to boost trade with India has been commended by leaders of the West Midlands Minority Ethnic business community.
The establishment of an India Co-ordination Group follows the launch of an Action Plan prepared by Advantage West Midlands and UKTI.

Already trade between the West Midlands and India is worth £8.7 billion a year and is growing at a rate of 10 per cent each year. There are 30 India owned businesses in the region – the largest of which is Tata Motors who protected 30,000 jobs with the take over of Jaguar and Land Rover. At the other end of the scale, but just as important for the people concerned was the acquisition of Bridgnorth based Novelis by Hindalco protecting 140 jobs.

“Trade links with India are very important and the West Midlands with its strong cultural ties are well placed to take advantage of future growth,” said Mohammad Nazir, Chairman of the West Midlands Minority Ethnic Business Forum that provides strategic advice to Advantage West Midlands.

“India has transformed itself into an economic superstar on a global scale and this means opportunities for us in the West Midlands. We can further help this transformation and take advantage of two-way trade. I believe that the deal between Tata and the two iconic West Midlands brands, Jaguar and Land Rover is good for our region and India.”

The Co-ordination Group and the Action Plan is backed by Birmingham International Airport that claims its runway extension proposal is vital for serving the India market.
