Local firms on starting blocks to create Olympic jobs

Black and Minority Ethnic firms in West London are being lined up to apply for Olympic contracts that could create new jobs
In the run-up to the 2012 Games, companies in Brent, Ealing, Hammersmith Harrow, Hillingdon and Hounslow will get help to win business at an event on March 11th.

“We are trying to give our local businesses an advantage”, explained Frank Wingate, Chief Executive of West London Business, who are co-sponsoring ‘Passport to Success’ at the Advait Sattavis Gam Centre, Wembley.

“There are huge opportunities to get involved as the cascade of
contracts from the Olympics continues. Large companies are reviewing their supply chains to provide opportunities for smaller businesses. This workshop is designed to enable firms to make the most of these opportunities”.

He added that the event would give small firms the confidence to sell to different types of organisations and aim for higher value contracts and cover the key elements of tendering to both the private and public sectors.

The day is split into two parts with a morning workshop for newcomers to tendering and afternoon seminars with practical advice and case studies on how to win Olympic business.

The event is also being backed by Samantha Alfred – HSBC business start up winner 2007, from West London. Samantha may be known to you from her appearance on BBC2’s Dragon’s Den where she pitched her British Asian greetings cards business. She was unsuccessful that day, but undeterred she has gone on to supply to established retailers including Clinton Cards, Fenwick’s and 40 independent retailers. Samantha will be in attendance to pass on her vital experience in overcoming issues that have threatened to get in the way of her ambitions.
